How Do You Get Scabies?

Human scabies is caused by the tiny mite Sarcoptes scabiei hominis. The scabies mite burrows into the upper layer of skin on humans where it lives and lays its eggs. This causes an itchy rash. The itchy scabies rash is the body's allergic reaction to the scabies mite.

Scabies is contagious and is typically spread by body-to-body (human-to-human) contact. Though less frequent, scabies can also be spread through contact with furniture, clothing, towels, or other laundry that is contaminated with the scabies mite.
