What is prostatitis?

Prostatitis is the general term used to describe prostate inflammation (-itis). Because the term is so general, it does not adequately describe the range of abnormalities that can be associated with prostate inflammation. Therefore, four types of prostatitis are recognized.

I have been battling prostatitis for almost a year. I have been on Cipro, Keflex, Z-Pac, Avelox and nitrofurantoin without any relief. The pain in the left testicle was so intense that the testicle and epididymis on the left side were removed and then the pain started in the right scrotum and I suffered with that for several months. All tests for bacteria have been negative in both urine and blood. I had the scope inserted so the doctor could actually look inside and he said I had restriction around the prostate area and the prostate is enlarged. I was placed on tamsulosin and that has also failed to provide relief. I have a strange symptom and that is, when I ejaculate there is no fluid and I can only think the swelling is so severe that the tubes are swollen shut. I had a CT scan performed and that also confirmed enlarged prostate. I am scheduled for a TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) procedure on the 10th of June and hopefully they will either find something or this will resolve the problem.
