Patient Comments: Pneumonia - Treatment

What kinds of treatment have been effective for your Pneumonia?

Published: April 04

To treat my pneumonia, I was given Levaquin (750 mg.), Ventalin (two doses, four times a day), lots of water, and rest. I was also given Tylenol extra strength. A heating pad has helped the pain in my side and back tremendously.

My daughter is 5 years old and was diagnosed with pneumonia 4 weeks ago. She was prescribed antibiotics and medicine. The pneumonia is gone, but the cough is lingering and it acts up when she's active or she goes outside. The cough almost sounds as if she is trying to clear her throat. Does anyone else have this experience and/or have any ideas for any remedies?

I woke up with a sore throat. Thinking it the onset of a cold, I ignored it. About 3 days later, I noticed that I was coughing, a very 'chesty' cough, and it was growing worse. One night about 7 days later, I could not stop coughing and I was badly wheezing. I went to the doctor the next morning who prescribed 2 types of antibiotic and a cortisone inhaler for what we thought was bronchitis. The antibiotics helped a little but the inhaler was almost worthless. One week later, still coughing badly, I went to another doctor who suspected pertussis (whooping cough) and prescribed a stronger antibiotic for a longer period. He also ordered a blood test. The stronger antibiotics helped a great deal and the test confirmed mycoplasma type pf pneumonia. I'm now into my 6th week of coughing although it is greatly lessened. Apparently there's nothing more that can be done, and it will gradually disappear. I hope so!

I have been sick with Pneumonia for 5 weeks now. I am currently on a third course of antibiotics. I was prescribed Doxycycline at first but that was before it was determined i had pneumonia. I am also an asthmatic so i had to take a 10 day, 50 mg taper of prednisone. At one point i was also given a depomedrol shot. I finished my prednisone and my asthma resolved for a short while. I was then given Augmentin which i faithfully took and now i have just recently began taking Avelox. I am allergic to Levoquin and Zithromax. I am hoping my asthma stays in check while i continue to fight this infection.
