Patient Comments: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) - Treatments

What was your treatment for irritable bowel syndrome?

I was diagnosed with IBS as a teenager, and also have three close relatives with the disease. Nothing helped until I tried lorazepam. I use 1.5 mg/day at the first sign of serious pain, and maintain that dose until 3 days after the pain stops. I now have a few attacks a year, which last a week or two. Previously I had frequent attacks which could last for months. I cannot accept that my doctors didn't mention this treatment option to me a long time ago.

My irritable bowel syndrome journey began 20 years ago. Since that time I have had my gallbladder removed, a colonoscopy, endoscopy, barium tests, and been put on anxiety meds...all to no avail. Then one day I met a doctor who suffered from IBS and she changed my life. She said there were over 100 meds to try to solve my pain, and we would try every one of them before we panicked. Well, my miracle drug ended up being hyscyamine. I take one pill every 4 hours and it almost allows me to live an ordinary life. I still have occasional bloating, nausea, diarrhhea, etc..but for the most part, my life is pretty normal. I am ever vigilant when eating in restaurants to avoid cilantro, oregano, cumin, or parsley. Coffee and alcohol are also very limited. I also drink a DanActive every day and try to load up on beans/fiber. Also, eat almonds every day. Hope this helps!

I am 68 years old, female, and have suffered with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) for 19 years. I have tried every diet, medicine, and test. I suffered with diarrhea, pain, nausea, and humiliation. I have even been in a IBS study. I found a doctor who would work with me and allowed me to try Premarin. I have been 'normal' for the past two months. Maybe this will help others.

I am a 78 year old female in excellent health except I was diagnosed 40 years ago with irritable bowel syndrome and Lactose intolerance. Have visited doctors all over the US. I have taken Lomotil as necessary when needed. Last year I visited family in Tennessee and was taken to Flintstone, GA to an herb doctor. He prescribed an herb concoction that I take after each meal and found that almost cured me. Last month I learned of Heather's Tummy Teas for IBS. Wow, what a relief. I don't drink it every day, but when I do, my tummy is calm, and no surprise diarrhea so far. I purchased the tea at my Health Food Store.
