Patient Comments: Abscessed Tooth - Treatment

What treatment did you undergo for your abscessed tooth?

My abscessed tooth started on Sunday at 7 am. Mom and dad treated the tooth with Advil and by cleaning the area with warm salt water. I don't know it this treatment would it work but I am a thumb sucker so therefore I think the bacteria spread out faster. By 10 pm the infection swelled my face to a size of small lemon. By 3 am is the size of an orange and the swelling is closing my right eye. Mom and Dad are worried but hopefully they will be able to control this thing until 8 am dentist appointment.

This all started over twenty years ago by a dentist who "over-filled" three of my molars. I have had nothing but problems with them all. Right now I am suffering with an abscess, my jaw and neck are swollen, the pain is immense, but Tylenol helps. I cannot open my mouth to eat, and until the antibiotics clear up the infection the tooth, what's left of it, cannot be pulled.

It started in August when I noticed my gums were swollen. I went to the dentist and he told me I needed a root canal. Since I didn't have dental insurance, I decided to wait for a month. I was getting married and I would have insurance. The dentist gave me antibiotics and made an appointment for next month. The funny thing is my tooth never hurt until the dentist started the root canal. That didn't help so I decided just to pull the tooth. Hoping it would all be over with. I went back for my 2 week check and cleaning and it was still swollen. He sent me to an oral surgeon. I had surgery to clean out the area. That was in Dec. After the surgery the area was still swollen hoping it would go away soon. But it started hurting again. The oral surgeon gave me another round of antibiotics but all it did was make my stomach upset. So now I am going to infectious disease doctor. Hopefully, they can figure out what's going on.
